We get a lot of questions about a certain type of photograph customers see in our portfolio book because it has a very unique look which tends to catch people’s eyes all the time. We call it the “ringlight shot”. It uses a special light we have that allows us to light subjects in a unique way that can’t be achieved with regular studio lights. This type of portrait, as Mel likes to say, “takes off 10 years and 20 pounds”. As you can imagine, women love it. Here are some of our favorite adult ringlight shots…
Ringlight shots are not specific to adults though. We’ve had a few seniors that wanted to give it a try and absolutely loved the really unique results:
Kids also look great in ringlight shots…
You may notice that the photos above are black & white and standard portrait orientation (If you haven’t yet, just click on the pic of your choice to see the full version). Because of the style of processing we use for the ringlight shots, they look best as black & whites and cropped vertically, but they don’t always have to be…
So that’s basic ringlight shots, 101. Just another service we can provide for you next time you’re in our studio! Don’t hesitate to ask as it only takes a few minutes and it’s included in your session time should you want to try one. Just let us know!
We took Dave and Kristi out to take a handful of engagement photos they plan to use on labels for some custom made wine they are going to give away at their wedding. We spent some time both outdoors and in the studio.

You might not be able to tell at first glance, but the bride asked us to do something special for her. Believe it or not, we removed her braces in every single one of her photos in anticipation of her not having them on their wedding day. We were happy to do it for her, and she was very happy with the results! Just one more thing we can do for you should you need it.
We were asked to visit a local company and setup a mini-studio to take photos for their annual Halloween dress-up day. The entire company dresses up, and the various departments have competitions for bragging rights. Another competition they have is the individual “best costume” contest. We offered to have anyone come down to have their photo taken, where they would be submitted for the competition as well as get a digital copy of their image. We also offered them a black and white ringlight shot if they wanted one, which we thought would give people an additional option. As you can see, they turned out great.
Here are a few of our favorites…
The Ryans also visited us today at the studio for some family photos. They hadn’t had family portraits taken in some time. They’d never had ringlight shots taken before, so we decided to give it a try with the girls. Mom thought she was going to get off easy, but we talked her into one as well. Needless to say, she was ecstatic with the results.
